Early contractor involvement and construction solutions for an architecture firm.

The PTW workspace - built by Sheldon, with interior design by PTW Architects - is an exemplary illustration of what can be achieved when clever design thinking, beautiful aesthetics and quality workmanship seamlessly blend together.

Significant growth within the company and a looming lease expiry meant PTW had the opportunity to move. They decided to relocate to Level 11, Aurora Place, 88 Phillip Street in Sydney. Preliminary design concepts were completed by PTW when they engaged Sheldon to complete the build of the workspace under an ECI delivery method.

Innovations

The PTW workspace is an example of harmoniously blending innovative design, aesthetics, and craftsmanship. Noteworthy innovations in this space include:

Acoustically Treated Timber Flooring: The office features timber flooring treated for noise reduction, addressing inherent noise transfer challenges. Sheldon collaborated with an acoustic engineer for a multi-layer solution, including a 5mm Regupol 5512 acoustic underlay, 30mm Martini acoustic insulation, 19mm particleboards, 19mm battens, and timber flooring. A Tap Test ensured minimal impact on occupants on other levels. This elevated floor structure also concealed cabling, eliminating the need for unsightly power poles.

Idea Generation Spaces: The workspace incorporates diverse collaboration zones fostering micro-communities. Strategically placed idea generation spaces encourage spontaneous collaboration, utilising black glass writable surfaces instead of traditional whiteboards. Operable walls around the main meeting room also serve as writable surfaces.

Hidden Storage: Addressing the storage needs of architects, cupboards were ingeniously concealed behind collaboration booths with sliding writable surfaces.

Wellness Design: Prioritising wellness, the workspace hosts yoga sessions and incorporates sit-to-stand desks for staff. This emphasis es a healthy work environment.

Coordination of a live site

As multiple fitouts were concurrently taking place in Aurora Place, effective logistical planning was crucial to avoid conflicts and ensure smooth operations.

Tenant Management: Sheldon adhered to restrictions on noisy works due to the building’s Grade A status, conducting much of the program out-of-hours to minimise disruption to adjoining tenants.

Site Logistics: Sheldon adhered to Building Management rules regarding deliveries and timing. Carefully planned site logistics, including lift access and materials handling, due to multiple concurrent trades within Aurora Place, contributing to the project’s success.

Site Management: Strict protocols, including sign-in/sign-out procedures, hot works permits, services isolations, evacuation procedures, and WHS management plans ensured proper site management throughout the project.

Result

Through a combination of strategic planning, collaboration, innovative problem-solving, and careful material selection, the PTW project overcame construction challenges and achieved the desired design outcomes, resulting in a representative and impressive workspace within the Grade A building.
