International Women’s Day 2024: the transformative power of representation for women at Sheldon

We like to celebrate the achievements and talent of women at Sheldon a lot more than one day a year, but we’re more than happy to shout out loud about our incredible team of women this International Women’s Day.

We’re proud to have women in our leadership team, project management, finance, sales and a currently all-women design team, making up more than the industry average of 13% women in construction companies.

We asked women at Sheldon what they’ve learnt about working in the industry and what they love most about being part of this team. We also asked what they’ve been watching, listening to, or what books they’ve been passing around the office recently – because they have impeccable taste!

What’s something you’ve learnt about being a woman in the design and construct industry that has surprised you?

  • “Being a female Project Manager in this industry has made me so proud. I am fortunate enough to work with many extremely passionate people who care about the wellbeing of others and want to make a difference.” – Vivian, Senior Project Manager

  • “One surprising aspect of being a woman in the design and construction industry, particularly as the manager of an all-women design team, is the transformative power of representation. Initially, I anticipated more scepticism or resistance due to gender dynamics, but what I’ve discovered is the impact our team’s visibility and success have on challenging stereotypes and inspiring others.
Our presence not only challenges preconceived notions about women’s roles in traditionally male-dominated fields but demonstrates the immense talent, expertise, and leadership women bring to the table. It’s been surprising and incredibly rewarding to witness how our collective achievements not only elevate our team but also pave the way for greater inclusivity and diversity within the industry.” – Dani, Design Manager

  • “I’ve learnt how crucial it is to align yourself with those that have shared values.” – Belinda, General Manager

  • “We have a significant positive impact on team dynamics, problem-solving, and innovation. Despite construction being traditionally male-dominated, we bring diverse perspectives and approaches to project management, design, and implementation. This diversity leads to more creative solutions to problems, improved collaboration, and a more inclusive workplace culture.” – Taylor, Interior Designer

  • “I’ve learnt how resilient and strong women need to be in the construction industry.” – Rosa, Senior Designer

  • “The support provided to women in the industry through organisations such as WIDAC has been significant for the representation of women.” – Jacqui, Project Manager

What’s your favourite thing about being a part of Sheldon’s team of fabulous women?

  • “Everyone is so supportive of each other. Women lift up other women!” – Bronwyn, Executive Assistant

  • “We are setting an astronomically high bar in our industry in all aspects of gender equality and we continue to outshine our own benchmark, due to employing and recognising team members who are the best of the best – it just so happens that a WHOLE lot of those are outstanding women!” – Belinda, General Manager

  • “Being part of Sheldon’s team of fabulous women is incredibly empowering. We share a bond that goes beyond just colleagues; it’s like having a supportive family at work. What I love about managing an all women team is the diversity of perspectives and skills we bring to the table. Each designer has her unique strengths, and together, we create a dynamic and innovative team that can tackle any challenge thrown our way. It’s inspiring to see how we uplift and champion each other, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and succeed.” – Dani, Design Manager
