A successful workplace expansion enabled by an interconnecting staircase and intelligent design.

Sheldon’s expansion of Thinktank’s North Sydney workplace from one to two floors marks a significant growth in our collaboration with this returning client. Having completed Thinktank’s fitout on Level 24 at 101 Miller St a few years ago, Thinktank’s growth meant they required a larger workplace. They took the opportunity to expand into the whole of Level 23 beneath, rather than move from this location, creating an interconnected two floors with a reinvigorated energy and atmosphere.

The addition of an interconnected staircase between the two floors transformed the space and how the company operates. Alongside deciding to stay in the same building, Thinktank decided to provide every employee with a dedicated desk, rather than reduce the number of available desks as a response to employees working from home.

Interconnected staircase at Thinktank's Sydney office connects their two floors.

Solution

Due to the addition of the staircase, the existing workspace on Level 24 was adjusted to enable the centrepiece of the staircase within the reception area. Our design expanded the reception area, and refreshed the kitchen breakout area with the addition of tiered seating, alongside the exisiting booths and café-style tables. The breakout maximises the striking views over the city and harbour, as well as the natural light.

Level 23 below offers a more focused work environment. Our full floor design is centred around the staircase in the front of house space. LED lights feature underneath the staircase, guiding the way up or down. Descending the staircase onto this floor, one enters a calming area with a small kitchen/tea point. A variety of seating options are provided through couches and custom-manufactured joinery that wraps around the kitchen bar.

A highlight of this space is the incorporation of planting in the joinery, and in a large planter beneath the staircase. This lush space reinforces a connection to nature, providing a green outlook across this floor.

A large training room with sliding doors sits on the perimeter, opening up to the break out space. Smaller meeting rooms also benefit from the natural light and stunning views on the edges of this floorplate. We relocated 22 workstations from Level 24 to Level 23, ensuring they were not discarded.

Result

The expanded and refreshed workplace for Thinktank exemplifies a successful partnership, that has seen Thinktank return to Sheldon for three iterations of their workplace over the years.
